AMT 16V Conversion. Fueling. Interior. Finishing touches.
The final thing to fit was the fuel injection system. I'm using a kit
again supplied by AMT, it
consists of the throttle bodies (45mm
Jenvey type) along with a DTA ECU and a custom built loom, the one new sensor I
had to buy was the air temp sensor. The ECU was fixed behind the dash on a
cushioned plate. The
only connections made were
power for the coil and ECU plus earths, other outputs were for the launch
control (switch and sensors at the back wheel) along with a shift light and
tacho. The rest of the loom was fed through the bulkhead and the various
connections made. An Astra 16V fuel pump was fitted on the rear subframe and a
solid line run inside the car, through the bulkhead to the fuel rail via an
inline filter. A Regulating valve was fixed in place to keep the fuel pressure
constant and the existing return (from the turbo conversion) was used.
The launch control switch, shift light and the
control button for the SPA Speedo were fitted into the ash tray. The cable for
the launch control was extended to the back and a bracket made to fix the
sensor on the rear drum backplate. The rear minifin was drilled and self
tapping screws put in
equally around the rim. The basic idea
is that when activated the software senses that the engine is speeding up but
that the undriven wheel (with the sensor on) isn't, therefore you must be
wheelspinning and its cuts engine power. (It's more complicated that that, but
you get the idea). Its not a proper Traction Control system, more a crude
version to use when drag racing etc. I've only tried to get it working twice
and I think it just about did, the problem being that it doesn't wheelspin too
much, in the dry anyway!
The rest of the interior follows the norm, I fitted a full FIA Spec 6 point cage with a detachable rear diagonal. The seats are a cheap bucket type and the seatbelts are now four point harnesses. The dash is a Mini-Its carbon effect type with volt and oil pressure gauges. The Speedo gauge is now defunct and I now use a SPA Digital readout, it picks up a reading off the dummy driveshaft, and is easy to calibrate and adjust, it also has timing functions for acceleration between user definable speeds, plus max speed recall and other functions. The Steering Wheel was changed to a Sparco one with Alcantara trim with two buttons (that don't do anything - yet). There is no stereo of any sort. The only obvious difference to any other Mini is the Vauxhall gearstick and linkage.
